Research, UX, UI / Interaction Design I (DAAP)

The challenge for this class project was to pick an event and create an interactive application appropriate for the event. I chose Midwest UX 2016, a UX design conference that took place in Louisville that year. Through my research I identified scheduling and exploring the host city to be two of the main challenges for attendees, and this is the problem my application aimed to solve.

01 / Personas

I created three personas that I felt represented the scope of attendees at this event: a student, a young professional, and a creative director. Each persona has different experiences and different key concerns.

02 / Experience Mapping

Based on the created personas, I created experience maps highlighting how people would find out about this event, how they would enter the event, and how they would remain engaged both during and after the event. This process revealed that certain aspects like scheduling and exploring the host city were concerns for all of my personas, and this heavily influenced the design of my application.

The exploration of personas and experience maps led me to my focus for the app, which was integrating discovery of the host city into the scheduling process of the event. I created information architecture for the whole application, and highlighted which area I would be focusing on actually designing for the purposes of the assignment.

04 / User Flows

Flows-2018 REVISED.png

The first step towards the design of this app was creating wireframes and user flows to explore the different types of screens and different interactions. The first user flow depicts the login process, where the user would be able to create or join a team in order to make scheduling among coworkers easier. The second user flow shows the process of finding an event and adding it to the schedule. The third user flow shows the process of finding a specific type of restaurant.

05 / Design Iterations

Since I chose an event focused on design, I decided I wanted my aesthetic to be focused on typography. My design explorations concentrated on the use of typography and the use of the existing branding colors.

06 / Final Design

The final design of the application integrates the event's branding and my typographic explorations. The design focuses on allowing the user to add events to a personal schedule as well as highlighting break times where the user can explore the city through lunch breaks or happy hours.
